What is a Kaffarah In Islam?

Kaffarah is a charitable compensation made by Muslims for intentionally breaking any fasts during the holy month of Ramadan, without a valid reason.

What is a Fidya In Islam?

If an individual is unable to fast during Ramadan and is also unable to make up the missed days afterward due to a long-term health condition or other valid reason, they are obligated to pay Fidya. Fidya involves providing food for someone else to be fed in their place.

What's the Difference Between Kaffarah and Fidya?

Kaffarah and Fidya are both terms used in Islam to refer to forms of compensation for missed or intentionally broken fasts. However, the main difference between the two is the circumstances that require their payment. Kaffarah is mandatory when someone deliberately breaks a fast during Ramadan without a valid reason. In such cases, the person must either fast for 60 consecutive days or feed 60 poor people. On the other hand, Fidya is paid when a person is unable to fast during Ramadan due to a valid reason, such as illness or pregnancy. In such cases, the person is required to pay the equivalent of feeding one person for each missed fast.

"Fasting is for a fixed number of days, and if one of you be sick, or if one of you be on a journey, you will fast the same number of other days later on. For those who are capable of fasting (but still do not fast) there is a redemption: feeding a needy man for each day missed. Whoever voluntarily does more good than is required, will find it better for him; and that you should fast is better for you, if you only know."
Quran 2:184

How much is Kaffarah for Ramadan?

To atone for the intentionally broken fast, you must fast continuously for 60 days. However, if you are unable to do that, then you have to feed 60 poor people at a rate of £5 per person (the cost of an average meal in the UK). As a result, this amounts to £300 for each intentionally missed/broken fast.
